Today was show and tell in 2nd grade and Gracie was extremely happy because she got to bring her baby sister Finley. Finley is almost 9 months old and now has two teeth. Though not quite crawling she can scoot wherever she wants to go. Finley was not intimidated in the least by our chaos!

2nd Graders are learning Double Digit Subtraction with and without regrouping! Mrs. S, our student teacher from Chadron is helping them with strategies and giving them lots of practice.

Making New Friends

On Tuesday we had the opportunity to Skype with our new friends- Mrs. Whitmer and her 2^nd grade class in Muhlenberg, Kentucky! Skype is a program that allows video conferencing using computers. This is very exciting and the students are looking forward to getting to know other 2nd grade boys and girls from another state. We celebrated the first day at Hall Elementary School with a hawaiian theme. The staff was wearing brightly colored hawaiian shirts and grass skirts! As students entered the gym they were greeted with high fives and presented with hawaiian leis. Inside the gym music rocked as students walked and danced to the Chicken Dance, YMCA, and the Macarena. Then everybody participated in the Cupid Shuffle. After the staff was introduced they did a hula dance for parents and students. We welcomed new staff members Mrs.Evelyn Fletcher(custodian), Mrs. Vonnie Engler (Speech), Mrs. Cindy Delp (Resource), Mrs. Monica Kramer (Guidance), Mr. Ron Mohs (P.E.), and Mr. Duane Skiles (P.E.).

Second grade also welcomes two new faces. We are so excited to have Caroline and Colton join our team- they are doing great and are already making new friends! We are fortunate to have them in our class. Our first day half day at school was spent unloading and organizing our tools for learning, getting to know each other, and practicing our speaking/listening skills. Your child received a gift bag with addition and subtraction flash cards, ice cream erasers, “Extra” gum, and a domino. Ask your child why a particular item was included and see if they can tell you the significance! I am very excited about this year and look forward to rigorous and relevant learning (flash cards), where mistakes are sweet (ice cream erasers) because we can learn from them, and to building relationships as we work better together rather than alone (domino)!

Going Batty!

We are going batty in class this week and it has nothing to do with the full moon! Second graders are using netbooks to research information and find interesting facts about bats and how they help people. Students will organize and present their information to the class on Thursday. If you would like to watch you can catch us live on Ms. Burkholder’s Blog. The weather is cold outside but inside the 2nd grade classroom we are warm and buzzing with excitement! Last week we had the honor of Dr. David Engle, Dr. Kate Murphy, and Kim Cooper visiting our classroom during their visit to Hall School. They got to see our Reader’s Workshop that we are modeling after PEBC. Students are getting very good at making inferences and impressed our guests with their inferring! If you come out to school and check out the 2nd grade buletin board you can see your child’s two-point paragraph on the topic of thinking.

What’s New?

We had a great week after winter break incorporating new thinking and ideas! Second graders are participating in Readers Workshop modeled after PEBC strategies. PEBC (Public Education & Business Coalition) based out of Denver, Colorado provides professional development and consulting services to strengthen schools, train educators in thinking and reading strategies, and provide optimal learning in the classroom. It is exciting to see the students engaged in reading, thinking, and discussing! We are currently working on inferring so don’t be afraid to ask your child, “What do you infer!”

Cowboy Day

Last week was Cowboy Day. Cowboy Day is an exciting tradition in 2nd grade! During the week students researched cowboys and cowgirls from the old west and created a poster board display. On Cowboy Day we dressed as our cowboy/ cowgirl, read The Two Cookie Kid, ate Cowboy Stew, and gave our presentations. Thank you parents for all of your help!

Special Visitor

This week second graders read the story Henry and Mudge by Cynthia Rylant and were surprised when “Mudge” came to visit the classroom on Thursday! You can see pictures of our day with Mudge if you click on the Year in Pictures tab. Thank you to Mrs. Grogan for sharing her dog Neely with our class! We learned that Neely is a Wheaton Terrier. This breed is known for “wheaton greetin’ ” as they greet you with both paws on your shoulder and a lick in the face!

First Day of School

Wow; what an awesome class we have! Second graders are off to a great start and we are looking forward to an exciting year. Everybody was greeted at the door with high fives as they entered into a balloon- filled room with dance music playing. Shortly thereafter they got to see Hall School Staff dance to Grease Lightning theme music. Not to mention the chicken dance… school supplies are unpacked, pencils are sharpened, and tissue is stocked! See link below for first day pictures.

Welcome Back to School!

Hi Second Graders! Tomorrow is your first day back to school and I am very excited to have you in my class! My name is Ms. Burkholder and I will be your teacher. I am anticipating great things happening in our classroom this year and look forward to getting to know you. I have many fun and engaging activities planned to share with you that will help you learn and become better thinkers! We will be welcoming new staff to Hall school so you will see many new faces. School’s Out and Summer’s On!

This week Ms. Burkholder is becoming even more tech savvy! I am participating in Neal Hokanson’s workshops that include Podcasting, Blogging, and Digital Storytelling. Podcasting is a great audio tool! I can read a book, record it with the program audacity, and download it to an iPod to be listened to at a reading center. Students can read and record their written stories for families to listen to on our class blog. Classroom blogs connect parents and families with classroom activities as well as provide interactive and engaging practice for students at home. Digital storytelling creates multidisciplinary connections and integrates technnology into curriculum. I am looking forward to implementing these three pieces of technology in 2nd Grade during the upcoming school year!
